Hein

The Mistaken
Who He is....
Douglas Hein is a five star general and the world's current tactical leader; one who will go to the end of the extremes to destroy the Phantoms.

He's smart, but reckless at times.  Where Dr. Sid proposes the experimental 'wave theory, Hein rejects it for its unsubstantiated nature, which suggests he's earthly in his beliefs; or doesn't want to involve belief with his crusade.

Conceptions....
Hein is the bad guy; or rather - the antagonist with a face.  Phantoms can't really be termed as bad, so they stuck us with this eventual psychopath (who can't really be termed as bad either, despite the above statement).

I don't mind Hein, although I do hold a slight grudge against him.  While I have no doubt he's redeemable; he is responsible (or maybe half responsible) for the fates of my favorite characters.  I understand why he did what he did, but it was sheer stupidity on his part.

Hein is rather young to be a general.  He was promoted two years before the movie takes place, presumably because he was the most qualified when the North American forces were decimated.

Why He Isn't....
It seems that Hein is typically regarded as a tragic-hero type.  He has what it takes, but takes it all in the wrong direction.

This can be attributed to many things.  The death of his family, for one, could have snapped his mind rather easily.  In turn, this would suggest a caring or devotion of some kind towards them, ne?
