Gray

The Hero

Who he is....

Gray is the officer in command of the (a) Deep Eyes squadron.  He's loyal, principled, protective, caring, kind, strong (in love with the heroine [... not that heroine]); in essence, he's all you'd expect from a hero.  There are times when he is indecisive, but he thinks fast and often chooses what intuition tells him is the best course of action.

It's ironic that the time Gray is supposed to be the most heroic and successful is the time he screws up most royally.  Or looking his most heroic anyway, in which case it probably isn't very ironic.

Conceptions....
I don't have many ideas about Gray.  I don't dislike him; he's just not among my favorite characters.  I've seen mixed reactions about him; it seems that most people either love him or hate him.

So far and from my experience, claims about him being the most popular male character in the movie are unsubstantiated.  I think he was supposed to be, but....

Unconditional love seems to be Gray's point, whether you consider it weak or strong.  He lost Aki without explanation, yet still loves her; and I think he loves his teammates, despite their unruliness.

Would. You. Please. Listen?!
Gray is a leader and, supposedly, a good one.  But he tries to rely on friendship rather than authority when dealing with his direct subordinates.  The result is a shaky command.  Ryan frequently listens to him, but anyone else will only do so if they feel like it, if Gray gets snappy, or if Ryan sticks up for him.

The man that has what it takes to save the world (aside from Sid, of course) is so under appreciated.
